DIY Sleep Spray

I received a sleep spray as part of an Ipsy add-on last year and loved it, but too much of it caused it to smell atrocious. The buildup gave my pillow a scent that induced vomit. Instead of fading away over time, the sleep spray lingered. My entire room started to smell awful. It was all bad.

Lavender essential oil smells wonderful when diluted — almost candy-like.

I made my own, and it’s working well thus far — totally recommend if you want a sleep spray you know the ingredients of! “Fragrance mixture” in the sleep spray consists of chemical names and can extend to anything beyond what is named. I need more than that because allergies and sensitivities and the horrendous scent.

Materials

How to make the sleep spray

  1. 15-40 drops essential oil into the bottle, depending on your preferences. I honestly lost count midway, so I probably used closer to 34.
  2. Add a squirt of witch hazel or alcohol. This makes the spray dry faster and gives it something to cling to. I used witch hazel, but I’ve seen alcohol be used, too. No more than an ounce.
  3. Give it a whirl/gentle stir.
  4. Fill the rest of the bottle with water, close, shake.
  5. Spray, smell, add more drops of essential oil if desired. My spray is on the weaker side.

I wonder if tripling-up on your pillow cases before you spray might help? It might wash out easier and not saturate the pillow? I LOVE the idea of a sleep spray, though! I keep weird hours and it would be so handy to be able to calm myself down enough to sleep that way. Hope the homemade version works better than the IPSY stuff!

Nope! I use a pillowcase protector and pillowcase itself. The scent lingered on the fabric regardless. It did wash out, but I don’t want to be washing my sheets and pillowcases every two days.

I also find this spray works better (no alcohol in mine) to deter gnats without damaging my succulents. 😌 The other one had various chemical compounds in it.

My spray works better, though, yes. ☺️

I wash my bedding a lot but I agree, I wouldn’t want to have to keep at it or risk getting sick. I’m so scent sensitive as I get older, even just regular lavender can sometimes be too much for me!

I am definitely going to have to try this. I used to sleep so well when I had my Secret Scent Expressions Ooh La La Lavender – which is now being sold on Etsy for $40(?!). I believe that it will definitely help me in getting back to a “normal” sleep schedule…and not one where I sleep all day, and then am up for 2-3 days at a time.
